FINE RELIEF CARVED "READING, PA" FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE, CIRCA 1800. 63 KY NSN 40 Cal. 40. 59-1/2" overall, 44" oct bbl with smooth bore, relief carved on buttstock rear of tang and bottom of gun rear of ramrod thimble. The fishtail finial and 4-pc patchbox is reminiscent of several known Reading-Womelsdorf, PA makers. The relief carving on rear of cheekpiece is quite similar to one attributed gun of Wolfgang Haga, pg 202 Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle In It's Golden Age, Kindig, 1955. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Very good as restored. Gun has been professionally refinished, iron now has dark plum patina overall. Lock and side plate appear orig. The lock components probably are added and probably reconverted. Several stock repairs are noted at wrist and around lock. Stock is refinished and re-varnished. Brass mountings are cleaned with a couple of bends in patchbox and is a light mustard patina. Gun is unmarked with exception of "KETLAND / & CO" lockplate. Mechanically functional with clean smooth bore. 51958-31 JS (2,000-3,000)
