MORO SUIT OF ARMOR, 19TH CENTURY.About 28" x 25", 17-1/2lbs, constructed of fine and medium brass mail links, 72 wood plates with 13 remaining silver foil decorations on front breastplate and 2 large brass and silver decorated latches. Ethnic Moro (Muslim) population of Southern Philippines resisted Spanish and later, American colonization and were known to be very fierce fighters. Captain and later General John J. Pershing, recommended the use of heavier caliber pistols (Colt 45 semi-auto and Colt 45 "Philippine DA") relating one story where a Moro warrior was shot 7 times with the Colt 38 Cal. DA, and still continued charging with his 2-handled sword causing injury to several of his men. SIZE: CONDITION: Fair to good overall, complete with only a few breaks in wood plates, loose from mail. Both latches are intact retaining silver foil decoration over 90% of their surfaces along with floral tacked silver decoration which is uncleaned and patinaed dark grey. This is an honest "as found" souvenir, probably carried home by a GI from one of the Moro Wars. 52596-1 JS (1,000-2,000)
