RARE AND FINE HAND-SEWN 35-STAR CIVIL WAR FLAG WITH UNIQUE CANTON.This flag is in beautiful condition, measuring 51" on hoist and 86" on fly. Flag is totally hand-sewn of red, white and blue single-ply wool bunting with 35 double applique 3" cotton stars in an unique canton configuration not seen before. 1-1/4" canvas hoist has 3 hand-whipped eyelets and Philadelphia maker's mark "M BRIGGS / 314 SOUTH 4TH ST / PHILA". The 35th star commemorated the entry of West Virginia as the 35th state July 4, 1863 and was only official for one year. This is the rarest of star configurations during the Civil War. SIZE: PROVENANCE: Ex-George Kegerreis Collection, Harrisburg, PA, 2009. CONDITION: Very good overall, good colors, light staining, fraying and scattered small reductions unaffecting aesthetics.
