SCARCE AND DESIRABLE LEE METFORD MK I * RIFLE.BRITISHLEE METFORD MK 138278303Cal. .303 Brit. 30" bbl. Very scarce and attractive specimen, as manufactured by BSA&M Co. in 1891 with Victorian crown on receiver with London cartouche. Drill purpose additional stamp below this cartouche. Receiver SN is the only externally visible SN. However there are numerous cartouche proofs on the stock with broad arrow proofs also visible on bolt and cocking piece. Steel butt plate with brass attachment screws, magazine cutoff and volley sights all present, as is the scarce original cleaning rod. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish, very fine as arsenal refinished lustrous blue with some slight softening of the markings on the receiver flat below the bolt handle with most markings quite clear. Wooden piece to rear of rear sight exhibits an 1 1/8" crack running parallel to the bore line. Bolt cover a pleasing brown patina. Cleaning rod in the white. Butt plate a pleasing gray patina. Mechanics are crisp, bore is very fine, shiny and bright. Quite a fine specimen of a rare rifle. Although many British rifles were made, it is difficult to find certain models due to so many going through subsequent rebuild and update. This is a very handsome specimen, indeed. 53160-7 JWK (1,500-3,500)
