SCARCE AND DESIRABLE TEN BORE HOLLAND & HOLLAND HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE.HOLLAND & HOLLANDrifle BACK ACTION HAMMER1296710 BORE(CA 1890) Cal. 10 ga. 3-1/4" Chambers. Ten bore double rifles made for the 8 dram load, such as this rifle, are much sought after, as they provide nearly all of the "knock down" power of an 8 bore, with considerably less weight. (After all you carry them more than you shoot them.) This solid example has 24" Enfield rifled, dovetailed bbls with full length partially file cut rib with dolls head extension. A single standing leaf express rear, and silver bead front, sights (front with folding moon bead) are dovetailed. Tops of bbls are engraved "Holland & Holland 98 New Bond Street, London." and "Winners of all the "Field" Rifle Trials London" on tops. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 220 grains of powder. Splinter is robust and has integral loop. A wide sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Round bodied Jones underlever snap action with secondary rear bolt, is fitted with peninsula rebounding back locks with flat bodied serpentine hammers having dolphin heads. Top strap extends over comb. Action is engraved with near full coverage exceptionally well cut varying sized shaded scroll. "Holland & Holland" is on each lockplate, and left side of action is engraved "Charge 8 Drams 3-1/4 Inch Case". Steel trigger guard has SN in relief on tang which extends to steel grip cap. Nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut buttstock with point pattern checkering and right hand shadow line cheekpiece measures 14-5/8" over ancient, most likely orig, Silver pad. A vacant silver oval, sling loop, and Kenya registration numbers "2" "930" (?) are on toe line. Matching splinter forend has forward pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 2-7/8", drop at comb: approx 1-7/8". Cast: approx 1/2 off. Weight: 15 lbs. 14 oz. LOP: 14-5/8". CONDITION: Good, unrestored. Bbls retain some of what appears to be orig blue, perhaps as much as 30%, with numerous marks and scuffs, but nothing deep. Engraving of rib and lettering, remains excellent. Action and locks retain traces of orig color where protected, with only a few small spots of very light pitting. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with numerous marks and scratches, with old sanding marks. Pad is petrified with losses at heel and toe. Checkering has considerable wear. Checkering on forend is nearly flat. Bores are very fine to excellent, shiny with strong sharp rifling throughout, with some scattered shallow pitting mostly in right bbl. (Exceptional for an early black powder rifle.) Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are excellent. Lever return spring a bit weak. This robust rifle is undoubtedly a great shooter. 53152-1 mgm111 (8,000-14,000)
