SCARCE W. J. JEFFERY 16 GAUGE SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME SHOTGUN WITH TWO SETS OF BARRELS AND OAK AND LEATHER CASE.W.J. JEFFREYSIDELOCK2229316 GAW/CASE, EXTRA BBLMODERN; C&R(ca 1912) Cal. 16 ga. 2-3/4" Chambers. 27" and 28" Dovetailed bbls. 27" Bbls are SNed and have King Street address. 28" Bbls are unnumbered and have Bury Street address (post 1914). Both bbl sets have narrow swamped game ribs. Bbl flats on both sets are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1 oz of shot. 27" Bbls have 2005 London re-proofs for 2-3/4" chambers. Sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with near full coverage well cut rose and scroll. "W. J. Jeffery & Co Ltd" is on each lockplate. Action is filed with well shaped beads and fillets. Fences are filed in Woodward arcaded style. Blued trigger guard with rose and scroll on bow, has SN on tang. Well marbled, and nicely figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15-1/4" over checkered wood butt, and features drop points, point pattern checkering at grip, and a vacant silver oval on toe line. Splinter ejector forend has Anson release. 27" BBLS: Bore diameter: left -.680, right - .682. Bore restrictions: left - .020 (mod), right - .008 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .026, right - .022. Drop at heel: 2-3/4", drop at comb: 1-5/8". Cast: approx 1" off. Weight: 5 lbs. 15 oz. LOP: 15-1/4". 28" BBLS: Bore diameter: left -.667, right - .664. Bore restrictions: left - .026 (full), right - .020 (mod). Wall thickness: left - .028, right - .027. Drop at heel:2-3/4" , drop at comb: 1-5/8". Cast: approx 1" off. Weight: 6 lbs. 3 oz. LOP: 15-1/4". Gun is accompanied by makers oak and leather two gun case with brass corners, lined in scarlet cloth, and has red and black Jeffery King Street label in lid. Covered compartment contains two keys. CONDITION: Good, as found, as partially refurbished. Both bbl sets retain approx 95% of an old re-black. 28" Bbls are possibly original, and have many small patches of light rust. Action is an overall pewter gray. Screw slots show considerable use. Well done newer buttstock retains most of its orig hand rubbed finish with some light marks. A lightening hole in butt has plug pushed in. Bores are quite dirty but appear to be fine to excellent; chambers on 28" bbls have rust thick enough so that measuring plug cannot be inserted (so might be still 2-1/2"). Both bbl sets are tight and on face. Forend is a bit loose on 28" bbls. Ejectors are strong and very slightly out of time. Case leather has considerably darkened, shows some water damage, has some scuffs. New straps are good. Orig handle is fair to good, a bit tender. A high quality small bore English sidelock with a good combination of bbls that measure well, in need of a bit of TLC. 53078-1 mgm21 (6,000-10,000)
