IMPECCABLE QUALITY MASSIVE SINGLE SHOT FOUR BORE BREECHLOADING WATERFOWLING HAMMER SHOTGUN BY P. MULLIN OF NEW YORK. P. MULLIN SINGLE BBL Shotgun 1 4 BORE Cal. 4 bore. 48" Laminated steel bbl is engraved "P. MULLIN, NEW YORK" on broad flat full length rib. Breech section is very strong and heavy with .47 chamber walls. Bottom of bbl is stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs and nominal bore diameter "6". Large Jones under lever single shot action has very nicely filed fence. Bar lock with tall flat faced serpentine hammer is engraved "P. Mullin". As is typical with Mullin guns, they exude high quality yet are virtually devoid of ornamentation with the exception of nicely engraved screw heads, as is the case with this gun. Dense, fiddle figured American walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 13" over steel buttplate with short top spur. Widely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip which has hard rubber cap. Gold shield at top of grip is engraved "J A Norris". Matching large forend has steel tip and Deeley release. All visible component parts - barrel, opening lever, action, forend iron, and wood - are stamped "1", which may be SN. Bore diameter at muzzle: ,944 (considerable choke is visible in muzzle). Drop at heel: 2-3/4", drop at comb: 1-15/16". Cast: neutral. Weight: 20 lbs. 1 oz. LOP: 13". PROVENANCE: Daryl Middlebrook collection. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains most of its orig brown, visible under some subsequent darkening, most pattern visible. Action and lock retain 50 - 60% orig muted case hardening color. Stocks retain most of their orig finish with oil added as maintenance. Checkering worn. Pistol grip added to straight stock, appears orig. Bore is very good to fine with staining and grime toward breech end, may clean. Action is tight. Bbl is on face. Lock is crisp. A superb waterfowling gun, few of which have survived in good condition, by one of the finest early gunmakers in this country. 53097-2 mgm46 (8,000-12,000)
