IMPORTANT SECOND MODEL HENRY RIFLE ID'D to CORPL ISSAC M. MARSHALL, CO. I, 3RD U.S. VET VOLS. HENRY 1860 8816 44 Cal. 44. 24-3/8" bbl. Bbl marking is sharp and clear and reads "Henry's Patent October 16, 1860 / Manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co, New Haven CT". Comes with sling swivels with the (HENRY "BUMP' PROMINENT) underneath the sling swivel. No SNs on screws as is the usual with later Henry's. Has a light "H" stamped on the lower tang between the latch lever and the wood screw. Issac M. Marshall, born in Philadelphia, Pa., and first enlisted at age 24. By occupation he was a laborer. He joined the 3rd Vet. Vol. Inf. on March 24, 1865, at Philadelphia, and was appointed 8th Corporal on Apr. 11, 1865 and was Color Corporal from Aug. to Nov., 1865. He was discharged at Springfield, Ill., on March 23, 1866, upon expiration of his term of service. Accompanied by a 1997 Springfield Research Service Letter and archival copies which discuss information on rifle no. 8816 as found in the Company and Regimental books of the 3rd U.S. Vet. Vol. Inf.m which are presently stored in the National Archives under Record Group 94, Entry 112. The particular citation of no. 8816 described above appears in the Order Book for Co. I. A description of the history of his regiment is included; this is Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion; a copy of Corpl. Marshall's Compiled Military Service Record is also enclosed. There is no information on subsequent use or disposal of rifle no. 8816; however, these rifles were issued to the Veteran Volunteers on the proviso that they could retain them without cost upon discharge, provided they kept them in good condition. So it can be assumed that rifle no. 8816 was taken home to Philadelphia by Corpl. Marshall. CONDITION: Very Fine. Full oct bbl with 80% blue with the balance turning patina. Overall blue slightly darker in the fluted area of the mag. No dings or marks on the bbl to indicate any rough usage. Sharp edges on oct bbl would prove very little use. Receiver has the highly coveted dark mustard color that all Henry collectors love to see. All edges are sharp. All screw heads are in fine to very fine condition with little turning indicated. Finish on the stock is 90% plus on the left side and 95% plus on the right side. Both sides indicate very little impressions and scratches. Wood to metal fit is excellent. There are no cracks in stock, around the tang area on upper and lower tang. No chips or splinters missing as well. Wood to metal fit is very fine. 53091-8 MS (40,000-60,000)
