SCARCE STAINLESS STEEL BARREL WINCHESTER MODEL 1892 NICKEL PLATED TAKEDOWN RIFLE WITH SWISS BUTTPLATE. WINCHESTER 1892 997695 25-20 MODERN; C&R Cal. 25-20 WCF. 24-3/8" Stainless Steel octagon bbl marked on left side "MODEL 92 WINCHESTER 25-20 WCF" is also marked with "STAINLESS STEEL". Mounted with period Winchester A5 telescopic sight and mounts that were later added. Extra holes in the bbl. Original proof mark on top flat of bbl was drilled and tapped for threads for a scope mount and another proof mark added on left flat next to takedown collar. Combination Lyman globe front sight and Winchester Express rear sight. Also so mounted on upper tang is a Marbles tang sight. Nickel mag tube with forearm cap. Nickel receiver. Takedown collar is absent of any nickel. It is polished to make it look like nickel. Swiss-style buttplate is also nickel as is hammer and lever with close coupled double set triggers. Stock fitted with cheekpiece. Pistol grip "I" pattern checkering. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very good. Oct. bbl has no Japanned finish remaining having been polished bright. Markings are sharp. Mag tube retains 96% nickel. Forearm cap 98% nickel and receiver with 94-95% nickel. Nickel appears of the period and is Winchester factory quality and correct to gun. Stock of American straight grain walnut as the lower tang is not marked with any "X" of grade. Some surfaces scratches and small amount of splinters of wood next to left side of receiver. No cracks are visible on top or lower tang. Cheekpiece is late Winchester style that sets off the rifle handsomely. Forearm with light impressions on bottom and sides. No splinters are visible or gouges indicated. Forearm cap fits well and forearm fits well into takedown collar. Double set triggers function correctly. Bright bore. Crisp mechanics. This rare rifle is in the "no records" serial range but is very likely factory original with issues as noted. 53091-186 MS (10,000-15,000)
