OUTSTANDING AND RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1895 FACTORY ENGRAVED DELUXE RIFLE WITH FACTORY LETTER.WINCHESTER18952303930-40MODERN; C&R; ESACal 30-40. 28" full round bbl marked "30 US" encased in scroll flourish with single platinum band. Left side is rolled stamped "NICKEL STEEL BARREL ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER". Ivory bead front sight, rear sight is a flat top sporting variety. Fine $14 engraving with left receiver in full-coverage foliate scrollwork and matte ground background with a well-executed grizzly bear on forward end of receiver. Right side is engraved with the same foliate patterns with a buck and doe deer in an oval panel. Monogram "J.H.E." engraved on rear portion of receiver. Fancy American walnut stocks are carved in "E" style patterns with crescent buttplate. Bottom of tang reads "8527" with a small "H" and "XX". Buttplate is marked "8122" and stock channel. Ebony inlay in schnabel end of forearm. All screw heads are engraved. Accompanied by a Winchester factory Letter which lists the special order features:Fancy carved stock; Lyman sporting sights; Engraved $14; Monogram "C.T.E." (a misinterpretation of the ledger)and shipped Oct 7, 1899. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very Fine. Full round bbl with 97-98 orig blue. Left side of receiver 90-95% orig bright blue with balance turning a dark plum. Right side of receiver has a few dings but balance of orig blue also 95%. Breech block 96-97% blue. Box magazine retains 85-90% strong blue with a balance turning a patina color. Lever is 80-85% blue with balance turning patina. Wood finish is of a high piano finish and retains 90-97% orig finish with some surface scratches and impressions. Left side of stock with surfaces scratches and a few compression with no chips or cracks in stock evident on either side. Buttplate retains only 10-20% colors with balance of finish turning silver. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanics are fine, cycles properly. A rare example of a high grade Model 1895 that would be hard to improve upon. 53091-216 MS (30,000-50,000)
