SUPERB SMITH & WESSON MODEL NUMBER 3 FIRST MODEL AMERICAN SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. SMITH & WESSON FIRST MODEL AMERICAN 4097 44 AMERICAN Cal. 44 AMERICAN. 8" bbl. Full nickel finish with case colored hammer, trigger guard and trigger. Two piece smooth walnut grips with pinned blade front sight and integral sight and rear latch. Manufactured from 1870-1872 these handguns were Smith & Wesson first foray into the large bore cartridge handgun market. Used extensively during the westward expansion period as well as abroad. This First model American variation is considered to be one of the rarest of all Smith & Wesson large frame revolvers. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Outstanding overall condition with almost all factory nickel finish remaining. Case colros found on hammer and trigger guard are still vivid. Bore is sharp bright and crisp. Action and mechanics are functioning properly with no issues. The assembly no. 228 is found under the grips, rear of cylinder and rear of bbl under latch, however an obvious factory error has occurred as the latch has an assembly no. of 227. The SN 4097 is found on bottom of butt and on the inside of right grip, this outstanding example would be hard to improve upon and will certainly be the center piece of a Smith & Wesson. 53094-5 TDW (7,500-9,500)
