1/8 SCALE ALL BRASS WORKING MODEL OF THE BRITISH WWI 18-POUNDER RECOILLESS CANNON AND CAISSON.The Ordnance QF 18-pounder, or simply 18-pounder gun, was the standard British Empire field gun of the First World War-era. It formed the backbone of the Royal Field Artillery during the war, and was produced in large numbers. It was used by British Forces in all the main theaters, and by British troops in Russia in 1919. Its Cal. (84 mm) and shell weight were greater than those of the equivalent field guns in French (75 mm) and German (77 mm) service. It was generally horse drawn until mechanization in the 1930s. These guns were originally made by Armstrong-Whitworth and production started in 1903 and were produced until 1940 by numerous manufacturers. This well made model is made entirely of brass with leather and cloth accessories. Cannon, from trail to muzzle, measures 19" with 7" wheels. Caisson is 20" overall with 6" x 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" limber, model weighs in at about 22 pounds. Model has numerous moving parts and breech can be opened and closed. Recoilless mechanism works as do several of the elevation devices. Adjustable wheel brakes are functional. The limber, when unlatched, has compartments for artillery projectiles. Based on surface and materials, gun appears to have been made during the time of use of this particular cannon in the early 20th century. SIZE: PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Appears very good overall. There are small pieces missing. Copper and brass parts have mixed red/chocolate/mustard patinas. the only markings are on back of caisson "RFA (ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY) and 18PQF" and another plaque either by maker or of unit. 53094-135 JS (2,000-2,500)
