WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 "TRENCH GUN" WITH BAYONET AND SLING. WINCHESTER 1897 681632 12GA MODERN; C&R Cal. 12 ga. 20" cylinder bore bbl, with ventilated hand guard and bayonet mount, full blue finish, straight grain American walnut stocks with plain pistol grip and grooved forearm. Checkered Winchester hard rubber buttplate. Bbl shows 2-line Winchester address and patent marked rolled on left side followed by "12 GA". Breech of bbl is marked "CYL". "WP" proof is struck on top of bbl and receiver ring. Actuator slide is marked "MODEL 1897 / WINCHESTER / TRADEMARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF.". Right side of receiver in front of ejector port, is struck "US" over an Ordnance bomb proof. Right of receiver shows a prick punch hardness test mark to rear of ejector port. Bayonet mount is marked "PAT. JAN. 15 & MAR. 19. 1918". Bayonet is housed in an olive drab scabbard. Bayonet has a Springfield Armory eagle proof struck alongside an Ordnance bomb proof over "US" on right ricasso. Left ricasso is marked "1917 / REMINGTON" in a circle. Sling is marked "L-F CO / 1918" alongside a "O.E.G." inspector mark. Backside of sling also shows an "O.E.G." inspector mark along with an "A.M." inspector mark. Stock does not show a military acceptance cartouche or an Ordnance wheel proof. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl and magazine tube show 80% blue finish that is somewhat rough at muzzle. Hand guard and bayonet mount shows considerable blue finish. Markings are sharp. Bore is bright. Receiver retains 90% bright blue finish with handling marks overall. Markings are sharp. Mechanics are crisp. Buttstock retains most of an old re-varnish finish with handling marks and some scratches. Forearm shows almost all of the orig oil finish. Bayonet is very good with sharp markings. Scales show handling marks overall. Scabbard is very good and retains most of the green paint finish. Sling is very good with dark staining and sharp marks.
