FINE AND RARE WIDMANN, PHILADELPHIA EARLY AMERICAN EAGLE HEAD OFFICER'S SWORD EMBELLISHED WITH 6 LARGE EAGLES ON HILT AND SCABBARD.Rare and possibly unique officer's sword of which many were thought to have been made for army or marine officers, circa 1820. 30" blade with finely engraved etched patriotic panels. Solid brass scabbard made in the French Napoleonic style with flat grape leaf decorated ring mounts, finely engraved with numerous stars and two large 3-1/2" eagles. Reverse of scabbard is full firm marked "F. W. WIDMANN / PHIL.DA". Hilt is solid brass with finely engraved handle with most unusual eagle with shield below 15 stars terminating in well chased open beak eagle head pommel which holds a coiled serpent which forms the knuckle bow, clam shell quillon with two 3-3/4" eagle languettes with pierced relief. This is a most elegant sword in fine condition, retaining much of its orig silver plate. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good to fine. Blade retains much of its orig luster with crisp, well defined, high quality Widmann etching. Sword and scabbard overall have a light mustard patina with silver remaining especially in protected areas. 52865-22 JS (5,000-7,000)
