ESA - RARE AND UNIQUE AMERICAN EAGLE POMMEL ARTILLERY OFFICER'S SWORD WITH ARTICULATED CANNON CROSS GUARD.

This unique Spies, NY marked sword has Damascene quill back 28-3/4" blade. Carved ivory grip, eagle head pommel, fine engraved gilded scabbard with Liberty cap and American Indian. The unique and most unusual feature of this sword is the cannon barrel cross guard on partial carriage with articulating wheels. This is the only example that we are aware and most likely custom made. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Blade is overall grey with staining and pinprick pitting showing clear Damascene patterns, etched "SPIES". Scabbard throat has unusual arc which precisely fits the underside of the carriage cross guard with the still turnable gilded carriage wheels. Scabbard and hilt retain about 80% of their orig gold plate with sharp engraved panels. Carved ivory grip has several hairlines with hand worn patina. 52865-21 JS (4,000-6,000) ESA -
