FINE AND RARE HIGH GRADE SILVER GRIPPED PRESENTATION SWORD TO MAJOR GENERAL THOMAS JEFFERSON ANDERSON, TOPEKA, KANSAS.Major General Thomas Jefferson Anderson (1839-1912) prior to the Civil War was in command of the Santa Fe forces in the fight with the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad for the possession of the Grand Canyon in 1857. When the Civil War began, Anderson enlisted in 1861 and rose through the ranks from private to Brevet Colonel of the 5th Kansas Cavalry serving until 1865, Adjutant General State of Kansas 1865-1867, Mayor of Topeka 1875-1876, Post Master 1881-1885, and Member of the House of Representatives (1875-1881). This sword's silver presentation plaque reads "PRESENTED TO / MAJOR GENERAL T.J. ANDERSON / BY THE VETERANS OF THE LATE WAR / AND THE STATE MILITIA OF KANSAS / SEPTEMBER 15TH 1882". Sword appears to be leftover from the Civil War era with a Hortsmann Damascene gold blade with a fabulous sheet silver tapered cylindrical grip with state seal of Kansas finely engraved. Anderson is buried in Topeka Cemetery SIZE: CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Silver plaque and grip have smooth grey patinas. Brass hilt and mounts retain strong traces of gilt with old cleaning and overall a light mustard patina. 52865-31 JS (3,000-5,000)
