RARE AND VERY FINE AMERICAN NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD, CIRCA 1835.This is among the finest examples you will find of a large heavy bladed pre-regulation 1841 naval officer's sword with 29" quill back blade with a lustrous etched blade with naval motifs including large 5" panel reading "UNITED STATES NAVY". Blade is also maker marked "W H HORSTMANN & CO PHILADELPHIA". Grip is white large grain sharkskin, pommel is open beaked eagle with feathers running down the backstrap, mouth holding a multi-branched guard decorated with an American eagle sitting atop a fluted anchor, acorn quillon. Brass mounted scabbard has classic naval motifs of acorns & oak leaves, fluted anchor, and circle of stars. SIZE: CONDITION: Fine to very fine overall. Blade retains virtually all of its orig polish and luster with small areas of black staining and pitting. Mounts and hilt retain 90% bright orig gold plating. 52865-48 JS (1,500-2,500)
