AMES CRUCIFORM MILITIA STAFF SWORD WITH GOLD PRESENTATION PLAQUE TO CAPTAIN JACOB FREDENDALL (1778-1863).Nice Ames cruciform guard sword with star in center of languette and knights head pommel. 31-1/4" double-edged etched blade marked "AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE". Accompanying scabbard is slightly longer than sword and has applied 3" x 1" gold plaque "PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN JACOB FREDENDALL BY THE / MEMBERS OF THE ALBANY REPUBLICAN ARTILLERY / AS A TESTIMONIAL OF THEIR REGARD FOR HIM AS A / COMMANDER AND CITIZEN / ALBANY JANUARY 29, 1851". SIZE: CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Blade is grey with staining and pitting. Etched panels all discernible. Scabbard appears to possibly from another sword as it has dissimilar patina and poor fit. Carved bone grip has several small chips with hand worn patina. Brass retains about 30% gilt retained and scabbard has tiny traces in protected areas with old cleaning and several small dents. Plaque shows old cleaning and a couple of small reductions, only affecting one character in inscription. 52865-49 JS (1,200-1,500)
