BRASS BARRELED FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS BY HENRY MORTIMER, LONDON, CIRCA 1810.MOR TIMERBLUNDERBUSSNSN20 BORECal. 20 BORE. 29" overall, 14" brass flared cannon bbl with oct-rnd breech section engraved "H.W.MORTIMER LONDON, GUN-MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY" and marked with commercial proofs, swamped bbl flares to 1" at muzzle. High quality chamfered lock engraved "H. W. / MORTIMER" and is fitted with integral pan, bridled roller frizzen and high breasted serpentine cock, missing its sliding safety. Nicely streaked European walnut straight grip stock extends to flare of bbl. Stock is brass mounted with engraved buttplate, trigger guard with pineapple finial and two ramrod thimbles. Ramrod appears orig with iron threaded worm and horn tip. Mortimer was well known for supplying weapons for the royal mail coaches for which this weapon was probably made. CONDITION: Very good overall. All brass parts show old cleaning, and are a light mustard patina, engraving still sharp and clear. Lock shows some darkening and light pitting. Lock and frizzen springs are crisp. Stock retains much of its orig oil finish with hand worn patina with scattered cosmetic defects. Other than missing sliding lock safety, gun appears all orig and authentic. Mechanics are crisp with fine smooth bore. 53120-1 JS (2,500-3,500)
