BEAUTIFUL CURLY MAPLE FLINTLOCK DAVID POLLOCK, ALLEGHENY COUNTY PA RIFLE. D. POLLOCK KENTUCKY NA 45 This rifle has a 44 7/8" full octagon .45 caliber rifled barrel signed "D. Pollock". Rifle is 60" in overall length, butt dimensions are 4-1/2" High x 1-1/2" wide. This rifle has an apparently original flint lock marked "C. Robbins" and an outstanding and beautiful curly maple stock. The four-piece brass patch box is nicely engraved featuring five piercings. The rifle has double set triggers. The stock has a scallop molding incise carved along the bottom edge of the butt from toe to trigger guard. David Pollock is listed as having worked in Allegheny County Pennsylvania as a gunsmith from 1820 to 1846. In 1846 he built a mill on Saw Mill Run in Baldwin Township, Allegheny Township after which he apparently gave up gunsmithing. (Reference "Article and photo in "The Longrifles of Western Pennsylvania Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties" by Richard Rosenberger & Charles Kaufmann). David Pollock's rifles closely resemble those made by Thomas Allison, John Fleeger and Samuel McCosh. CONDITION: The condition of the stock is sound and unrestored from end to end and its beautiful curl is uniform throughout. The rifle is of high quality. There are two small wooden plugs in the top of the wrist, one each side of the silver wrist inlay, where an added target sight has been removed. These plugs could be redone and hidden if desired. 53105-2 RGG (3,500-5,500)
