RARE SCAGEL DOUBLE EDGED FIGHTING KNIFE WITH STACKED LEATHER AND STAG HANDLE WITH ORIGINAL SHEATH.Fine Scagel fighting knife that has 7-3/16" double edged spear point blade with triangle shaped ricassos, one side of which is stamped with Mr. Scagel's trademark Kris. Hand guard is oval shape with fluted top edge. Handle is stacked leather, red washers with aluminum & copper spacers. Pommel is stag, secured with a single brass rivet. Accompanied by its original Scagel made black leather, hand stitched sheath with thumb snap. Back of the sheath is crudely stamped "P.R.M.". This knife is similar in shape and size to several others pictured in the book Scagel Handmade, Lucie. William Scagel was the great grand daddy of American custom knife makers in the modern era. He was born February 1875 in Ontario, Canada and in 1900 immigrated to the United States. In 1917 he opened his shop in Muskegon, MI where he worked in metal & cutlery and in the 1936-1937 period began his knife-making career and died in 1963. Mr. Scagel's knives have been the inspiration for numerous custom knife-makers ever since. He produced knives from the tiniest bird & fish knife to the giant camp knives, along with axes & folding knives. He also produced numerous other articles such as copper-ware skillets, pots & pans. He even made corkscrews. His knives rarely come to market. SIZE: CONDITION: Good, no original finish remains with the blade a cleaned gray metal patina with some fine surface etching. Handle is sound, showing moderate wear with the leather a little dry. Scabbard is fine, solid & clean. 53082-1 JRL (5,000-6,000)
