ATTRIBUTED TO ORAZIO GENTILESCHI (Italian, 1562-1647) YOUNG WOMAN WITH A VIOLIN (SAINT CECILIA)Oil on canvas Housed in an antique gesso decorated gilt frame Unsigned, on verso are several labels including a label stamped "Szepmoveszeti Museum / Biralat" (Museum of fine Arts Budapest, Hungary), four others, two have a round stamp in a foreign language which is illegible Reference: The original version is located at the Detroit Institute of Art under the same title, where they have commented "This image of a young woman playing the violin has traditionally been interpreted as a personification of Saint Cecilia, an early Christian martyr and the patron saint of music, whose presumed body had been exhumed intact in 1599. Orazio may have used his daughter, the painter Artemisia Gentileschi, as a model for the woman, thus adding a note of realism to his representation." Note: It is known that Orazio Gentileschi used tracings both to replicate compositions and to do variants of them. Although, the quality varied. It is also known that Orazio retained templates of his compositions that he thought he could vary for the market. As his work was in high demand. This work that we believe is a painting by Orazio looks to be a replica of his painting Saint Cecelia at the Detroit Institute which appears to be one of his finest works of highest quality. The damage to this composition by poor conservation does not resemble the high quality of the Detroit painting. However there is enough reason to believe that this is a work by the artist SIZE: 30" x 39-1/4". Overall 36-1/4" x 45-1/2" CONDITION: Heavily restored with in-painting, lined, craquelure, good. For those interested parties we can provide studio quality photographs for detailed assessment 52986-1 WAG (30,000-50,000)
