JOHN THOMAS PEELE (British/American, 1822-1897) "BREAKFAST"Oil on canvas Housed in a later gesso decorated gilt frame Signed lower right "J. T. Peele 1888", Note; accompanying the painting is a National Hall of Art certificate of Authenticity dated June 16, 1944. This painting was purchased by Dave Korf, owner of Korf Sixth Avenue clothing store in Kenorsha, Wisconsin, on a buying trip to New York city in 1944 and has remained in the family until 2017. Reference; John Thomas Peele, who was born in Peterborough, England, came to the United States when he was a child, and as a young man. He worked in Albany for two years as a portrait painter, and then in New York where he was elected a member of the National Academy of Design. Returning to London around 1851, he exhibited from 1852 to 1891 at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Society of British Artists, as well as at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He returned to England from 1841-1844 and later in 1851, while still exhibiting in the U.S. He remained in England, becoming active in the Society of British Artists and living on the Isle Of Man from 1858 to 1865. He died in England in 1897. SIZE: 42" x 32". Overall 49" x 39-1/2" CONDITION: Lined, restored with in-painting, very good 52991-1 WAG (7,000-10,000)
