A FINE CLASSICAL REVIVAL MAHOGANY DRESSING BOX TOGETHER WITH A VICTORIAN INLAID WALNUT TANTALUS.First half 19th century, England. The inlaid mahogany casket form dressing box with dome lid and satinwood crossbanding, opening to an interior of fitted compartments. The lid interior with mirror plate, mounted with four gilt-metal mounted Corinthian engaged half columns beneath a cast-brass Classical chariot led by lions with frolicking cherubs, a female figure riding within the chariot with symbols of "plenty" throughout. The box raised on a concave molded pedestal joined to a rectangular plinth terminating in cast-brass claw feet. The burled walnut Tantalus with slightly domed top, inlaid with foliate filled urns in the Classical taste within multiple ebony and string inlaid borders. The case sides serpentine, the whole in burled walnut and ebony. The hinged top and front panel opening to an interior with removable gilt metal tray, which retains original etched, decorated glass bottles with stoppers and with sixteen original stemmed cordials. The case sides also hinged to gain access to the tray and glassware. The whole raised on compressed ball feet. SIZE: Dressing box: 8" h x 12" w x 7-3/4" d. Tantalus: 11" h x 14-3/4" w x 10-1/2" d. CONDITION: The dressing box retains original surface with tight shrinkage crack across lid, now stabilized. Brass fittings original. Slight foxing to mirror plate, commensurate with age. Very fine condition overall. Tantalus with original surface and contents as noted. Small repair to molded edge at front of lid.
