COLONIAL REVIVAL MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK BY MAPPIN & WEBB.

Early 20th century, London, England. The bonnet with serpentine arched crest applied with foliate carved molding above the frieze with carved shell subsidiary crest above a carved heart shaped cartouche over a molded arch, to which is fitted a glass panel door, flanked by free-standing Corinthian columns with cast-brass capitals and bases, fitted to the case above a molded platform over an astragal glazed glass panel door joined to the box base with incurved mid-molding and with square raised panel, joined to a molded base raised on ogee bracket feet. The silvered dial with Arabic numeral chapter ring centering a time, strike, and musical aperture beneath a subsidiary seconds dial within cast-gilt-metal pierced foliate spandrels, each mounted with a masque, all on a brass plate; "MAPPIN & WEBB MONTREAL" engraved within the rondel of the numeral "6" above "MADE IN ENGLAND". Within the arch are two small dials, one for chime and silent, the other for musical choice of either "Whittington" or "Westminster", both within cast-brass foliate elements. The eight-day brass movement driven by three cylindrical weights on six pillars, striking on nine tubes; the musical selection on a brass cylinder. The clock has its original pendulum which originally contained mercury that was long ago removed. SIZE: 9' 4-1/2" h x 24" w (case), 15" w (throat) x 16-3/4" d. CONDITION: The case structurally very fine with original surface and rich patina. Movement appears fully operational and very clean. Hands original. The silvered dial with uneven color due to excessive cleaning over time. Otherwise very good. The tubes original, as are the pendulum and weights. 52973-2 HMG (3,500-5,000)
