EXCEPTIONAL BLACK FOREST CARVED WALNUT HALL STAND.Last quarter 19th century Switzerland. This fine example depicting a Chamois on rockwork beneath a stylized tree surmounted by an agitated raptor. The stylized branches forming hat and coat hooks centering a shield shaped beveled mirror plate set within the trunk. The Chamois with glass eyes standing above a circular carved simulated tree root attached to the rockwork serving as an umbrella holder. An oval drip pan fitted within the tree roots. The rockwork with tree stump, moss, carved leaves, and roots. The whole raised on four short foliate feet. Note: the hall stand disassembles in two sections. SIZE: 7' 6" h x 2' 7" w x 2' 7" d PROVENANCE: Contents of a lifetime collection "Brook Crossing," South Pomfret, VT. CONDITION: Hall stand retains old, if not original, surface. Section of umbrella holder has been reglued and refastened for stability. Shrinkage split present at front of base. Mirror plate appears original. No other serious areas of damage noted.
