RARE MANUSCRIPT PRESIDENTIAL NAVAL APPOINTMENT OF SAMUEL STORER SIGNED BY PRESIDENT JAMES MADISON.This unusual document on thin vellum measures 14-3/4" x 12" still housed folded in its original free-franked envelope signed by Charles W. Goldsborough who was Acting Secretary of the Navy during Madison's administration. This document appoints Storer as the Navy Agent for the port of Portland, Maine and is dated March 9, 1809. Totally manuscript calligraphy, not printed appointments and commissions are very rare and this is beautiful example. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good with fine seal, scattered areas of staining, light folds. Accompanying envelope has text stating "my father's appointment...". 52737-1 JGS (800-1,500)
