LETTER BOOK OF GEORGE WASHINGTON STORER, 1843-1846 WHILE IN COMMAND OF THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL YARD.This book in beautiful condition has the first 118 pages with manuscript copies of letters to the Secretary of the Navy concerning shipyard maintenance, improvements, annual reports and details of the launching of the USS Portsmouth which was built at Portsmouth Naval Yard in 1843. Letters start November 1, 1843 and end October 9, 1846. George Washington Storer (1789-1864) was a lifelong Navy man, serving for over 50 years in numerous posts, beginning as Midshipman in 1809 and retiring with rank of Rear Admiral in 1862. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good to fine, only light edge wear and scuffing at hinges. 52737-6 JGS (1,500-3,000)
