JOURNAL, USS COLUMBUS, CONSTELLATION AND POTOMAC, CAPTAIN GEORGE WASHINGTON STORER, JUNE 11, 1839-1841.Large folio journal kept by Captain George W. Storer commencing June 11, 1839, starting with the ship USS Columbus which was originally commissioned in 1819 and was a 90-gun ship-of-the-line. Columbus saw continued service until it was sunk at the Norfolk Navy Yard by withdrawing Union forces to prevent her from falling into Confederate hands. November 5, 1840 Storer is now given command of the Constellation. Entries start on that day where ship is provisioned and goes to sea December 10th. Day-by-day accounts cover over 150 manuscript pages. February 9, 1841, Storer again changes command to the US frigate Potomac. Day-to-day occurrences while in Brazilian waters are continued to the end of this journal, September 14, 1841. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good, sound, overall, though 3/4 leather binding has reductions, scuffing and heavy edge wear. Text pages and signatures are tight and fairly clean. 52737-9 JGS (1,000-2,000)
