JOURNAL OF A CRUISE ON THE USS CONGRESS, 1817-1818; USS CONSTITUTION, 1821-1822.Large folio 300 page journal, 13" x 7-3/4", commencing December 4, 1817 "JOURNAL OF A CRUISE IN THE UNITED STATES FRIGATE CONGRESS, ARTHUR SINCLAIR COMMANDER FROM NORFOLK VIRGINIA TO SOUTH AMERICA", 70 pages of text ending September 11, 1818. Interesting details about events around Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. The back of the journal also contains detailed navigational aids in a 20 page text "INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NAVIGATION OF THE RIO DE LA PLATA" where both Buenos Aires and Montevideo are found near the mouth. Journal now re-starts May 13, 1821 aboard the USS Constitution from Boston to the Mediterranean. 180 pages of text detail day-by-day accounts ending May 22, 1824 with the ship being hauled into the navy yard. When the Constitution left on its tour, it was the flagship of the Mediterranean fleet with Commodore Jacob Jones commanding, Captain Benjamin W. Booth and Lt. George Washington Storer who kept this journal. SIZE: CONDITION: Very good overall. Book is sound and solid with tight signatures, good text and paper, soiled edges, scuffed covers. 3/4 leather binding has heavy edge wear, staining and scuffing. 52737-10 JGS (15,000-25,000)
