BRONZE EGYPTIAN REVIVAL CANDLESTICK FROM STEPHEN DECATUR FAMILY DESCENT, CAPTURED FROM HMS MACEDONIAN.

Family legend states this early French bronze Egyptian Revival candlestick was taken as a souvenir after Decatur's famous battle while in command of United States over HMS Macedonian during War of 1812. Elegant 7-1/2" bronze cylindrical candlestick is decorated with three Egyptian lion-faced figures of very similar design noted on ancient Egyptian art. Egyptian Revival architecture and decorative art began in earnest in France in the first quarter of the 19th century after Napoleon's Egyptian campaigns, 1798-1801. SIZE: 7-1/2" x 3". PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Old cleaning residue and light bronze patina with staining. Ten 3-1/2" crystal drops are complete and matching. 52714-191 JGS (300-500)
