COMMODORE STEPHEN DECATUR AUTOGRAPHED LETTER.Fine 1-pg ALS of American Naval hero Commodore Stephen Decatur, Jr (1779-1820) written in 1818, just prior to his untimely death in duel at age 41. ALS sent from Washington, DC to Virginia diplomat Littleton W. Tazewell (1774-1860), signed "Yours truly Stephen Decatur". Letter concerns defending the town of Chesapeake, Virginia. SIZE: Mount: 10" x 12". PROVENANCE: Direct family descent of family of John Pine Decatur, the Commodore's brother; Stephen having no children, thence from the most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Very good overall. About 1" repaired crack at one fold. Ink dark and discernible in archival mount. Laid, watermarked paper 8" x 9-1/2" .
