Framed steel plate engraving "Commodore Stephen Decatur / Engraved by Henry Meyer from an original picture by John W. Jarvis". Wood backing of frame is inscribed: "This picture was given to my mother by General Page of Norfolk, VA. The frame is made of the hatch (live oak) of the Frigate United States". Signed "Maria Susannah Decatur Mayo". The frame has beautiful grain taken from the deck of the ship that made Stephen Decatur famous when he captured HMS Macedonian in the War of 1812. Wood in frame is quite dense with beautiful grain, weighing over 13lbs. SIZE: 12" x 15", exposed paper image. Overall:19-1/2" x 23-1/2". PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Very good overall. There is light warpage to beveled lower frame panel and several age cracks as can be seen in photos. Backing of frame still retains screws, probably original to the ship.
