PAIR OF FRENCH EMPIRE BRONZE DOLPHIN CANDELABRUM TAKEN BY CAPTAIN STEPHEN DECATUR AS PRIZE FROM THE FRENCH PRIVATEER "CROYABLE" WHEN CAPTURED BY CAPT DECATUR JULY 7, 1798 IN COMMAND OF US WARSHIP DELAWARE.

Beautiful pair of 16" cast bronze candelabrum with detailed bases of dolphins with curled tails holding florally decorated, detachable double candleholders. Beautiful patina. This is among the prized Decatur family heirlooms, though there is no inscription, only family provenance. During the Quasi War, Captain Stephen Decatur was commanding US warship Delaware and captured a French privateer Croyable off Great Egg Harbor, New Jersey, July 7, 1798. The Croyable was the first American capture of this undeclared war. The Croyable had previously captured a Philadelphia merchant ship, Liberty and also had boarded the merchant ship Alexander Hamilton, whose captain had informed Captain Decatur of Croyable's position. SIZE: 16" x 12". PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Both appear complete and matching with mixed chocolate/olive patinas. 52714-206 JGS (8,000-12,000)
