IMPORTANT JOHN PINE DECATUR INLAID MAHOGANY FEDERAL HUNT BOARD / BUTLER'S DESK.

Circa 1810, Mid-Atlantic region. Rectangular top above the conforming case fitted with two simulated long drawers with hinged fronts opening to an interior fitted with an arrangement of valenced, blocked cubby holes, each with conforming drawer above centering a prospect door with inlaid oval fan patera opening to a bank of three blocked document drawers. To the right of the prospect door, the interior has been altered due to the later addition of a cupboard door on the proper left side of the case, which opens to a storage area. Beneath the butler's desk section, are fitted three aligned short drawers with cockbeaded edges. The hunt board raised on four square tapered legs, each headed by an oval fan patera above string inlaid panels terminating in brass capped Marlborough feet. Accompanying the desk is a John P. Decatur calling card which was found in the desk. SIZE: 41" h x 54-1/2" w x 24-1/2" d. PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Alterations as noted, one cockbeaded edge missing. Top with old repaired and filled shrinkage cracks along medial seam. Each front leg now strengthened by substantial iron angle brackets mounted within the case as reinforcement to early stress cracks and partial breaks to front legs at case. 52714-31 HMG (3,000-5,000)
