PORTRAIT OF COLONEL EDWARD A. CABELL ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE COOKE.

Oil on canvas portrait of a man seated in half view holding hand at side wearing a black coat, white vest and brown pants. A red curtain drape is on viewers right with shadow cast on back wall. Unsigned, attributed to George Cook (American, 1793-1849). Portrait circa 1820-1830. Housed in a fine giltwood molded frame. The stretcher bearing a typed label with sitters identity and biographical information including birth "Union Hill" Virginia and death at "Norwood" Nelson Co. VA. Also indicating "painted by brown". Exhibited: Corcoran Gallery of Art, "Works of Art from Collections in the Washington Area" Washington, D.C., 1952 Note: Colonel Cabell (1797-1869) was born at Union Hill, Virginia and attended William and Mary College. He inherited a large estate in Amherst County from his father. He married Mary Rice Garland in 1823 and was a member of the House of Delegates from 1837-1840. He was appointed to a federal position in the General Land Office in 1841 by President Tyler and chief clerk by President Fillmore. In this role, he became close to then senator Abraham Lincoln. Edward and Mary Cabell had seven children: William, David, Patrick, Edward, Jane, Mayo (died as infant) and Paul. The portrait is listed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum Art Inventories Catalogue as IAP82400064 with attribution to George Cooke. In 1970, Judith E. Webster, a Maryland Appraiser, examined the portrait and listed the work as "by George Cooke." SIZE: 30" x 25-1/2". Overall: 40" x 35". PROVENANCE: Mrs. Henry S. Venn, Washington, DC; A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Good restored condition, craquelure arrested by lining. 52714-44 WAG (4,000-6,000)
