PORTRAITS OF ANN JENNINGS WISE PROBABLY BY THOMAS SULLY AND HER TWO CHILDREN MARY AND OBADIAH JENNINGS WISE BY JOHN GADSBY CHAPMAN.

1) Oil on canvas portrait of Ann Jennings Wise shows a young woman seated with open book in lap looking at viewer. She wears a white fur edged burgundy shawl and has a large vase of flowers behind her on a green material covered table. Housed in a period giltwood frame. Unsigned, probably by Thomas Sully. A brass plaque attached to stretcher as follows "Ann ELizabeth Jennings / Born Dec. 31, 1808 - Died May 4, 1837 / First wife of Henry A. Wise of Va. / Daughter of Rev. Obadiah Jennings / & his 2nd wife Ann Wilson". 2) Oil on canvas portrait of Mary and Obadiah Jennings Wise, circa 1833, shows the two children seated on the floor with Mary dressed in a white dress and Obadiah seated in a brown outfit holding a cluster of grapes. Signed and dated lower right "JC 1833", the artist is John Gadsby Chapman (American, 1808-1889). On verso of canvas is written "Mary E. Wise AE 4 Years. / Obedia J. Wise AE 2-1/2 Years / John G. Chapman pinx 1833 / belonging to John S. Wise.". A brass plaque affixed to verso says "Mary ELizabeth Wise / and / Obadiah Jennings Wise / Children of Ann ELizabeth Jennings / and Henry A. Wise / painted by Chapman". Note: Ann Elizabeth Jennings Wise (1808-1837) was the first wife of Virginia Governor Henry R. Wise, and daughter of the Reverend Obadiah Jennings. Tragically, in 1837, Anne and one of their children died in a fire, leaving Henry with four children: two sons and two daughters. The portrait of the two children was painted in 1833 and depicts their oldest daughter Mary, age 4 years and her brother Obadiah, age 2 ½ years. The portrait is listed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum Art Inventories Catalogue as IAP82400045 with no attribution. In 1970, Judith E. Webster, a Maryland Appraiser, examined the portrait and stated the portrait of Ann Jennings Wise was "probably by Thomas Sully". SIZE: 1) 36" x 29". Overall: 45" x 38". 2) 30" x 25".
