PORTRAITS OF REVEREND AND MRS. OBADIAH JENNINGS.

1) Oil on canvas half portrait shows a standing young man in front of an open book resting on a red cloth. Unsigned, possibly the work of Rembrandt Peale, circa 1830. Housed in a modern giltwood frame. 2) Portrait of Ann Wilson Jennings possibly by Thomas Sully or Rembrandt Peale. Unframed, unsigned, circa 1830. Oil on canvas half portrait shows a woman on lace edged black dress with fur lined stole. She wears a lace bonnet and she sits in a wood framed green upholstered armchair. On verso is a brass plaque "Ann Wilson / Born 1787 - Died 1841 / 2nd wife of Rev. Obadiah Jennings / (Daughter of James Wilson of Wye Mills, Maryland & Sally Stuart) Mother of Ann Elizabeth Jennings, Wife of Henry A Wise." Note: The Reverend Obadiah Jennings (1778-1832) was pastor of the First Parish Church, Wye Mills, Maryland. His wife Ann Wilson Jennings (1787-1841) was his second wife and the mother of Ann Elizabeth Jennings, who married Virginia Governor Henry Wise. In 1970, Judith E. Webster, a Maryland Appraiser, examined the portraits and listed the portrait of Obadiah as "possibly by Rembrandt Peale" and the portrait of Mrs. Jennings as "probably by Thomas Sully". Another attribution might be Gilbert Stuart. SIZE: 1) 36" x 28-1/2". Overall: 41" x 34". 2) 36" x 29".
