SIX STERLING AND COIN SILVER CHILD'S HANDLED CUPS INCLUDING PEABODY, CABELL, AND GARNETT FAMILY INSCRIPTIONS.

1) Coin silver child's cup engraved "James Harper Peabody FEBY 18, 1837". Hallmarked on bottom "P" with bust of man, circa 1837. A note found in family appraisal indicated that a similar mug at the Metropolitan Museum "ref. Winterthur DACP. Probably the mark of John Pitkin 1803-1891, working in Hartford CT with branch in Vicksburg, Miss. The cup having an s-scroll handle with molded top and bottom rim. 3-1/2" h. James Harper Peabody 1837-1884. Son of George Frederick Peabody and Anna Harper. 2) American coin silver presentation Christmas cup engraved "Presented to Col. E.A. Cabell by a friend Christmas 1840", also on base "M.G. from her great aunt M.G.V. May 7, 1952" by M.W. Galt & Bro, Washington, D.C., circa 1840. The tapered cup with eight sides having a decorative scroll handle, the inscription on the side surrounded by a floral border. The base hallmarked "M.W. Galt & Bro". 4" h. Brief research indicates that there was an E.A. Cabell in Amherst County, VA. 3) American sterling silver child's cup engraved "Maria Garnett from her great grandfather, Henry A. Wise. Sept. 2d 1875", also engraved on base "F.H.P.G. Jr. from M.G.V. Sept 6, 1949" by Whiting Manufacturing Company. Plain round body with molded rims and shaped handle, marked on base with the Whiting trademark "sterling 143". 3-1/2" h. Maria Garnett (Venn) born September 2, 1875, died April 25, 1960 married Henry Straith Venn, 1869 – 1908. Henry A. Wise (December 3, 1806 – September 12, 1876) was an American lawyer and politician from Virginia. He was a U.S. Representative and 33rd Governor of Virginia, and US Minister to Brazil. During the American Civil War, he was a general in the Confederate States Army. He was the father of U.S. Representatives Richard Alsop Wise and John Sergeant Wise. 4) American coin silver child's cup engraved "Jennings Wise Garnett" by Bailey & Co, Philadelphia, PA, Circa 1850. Round stepped cup with bead bottom and top rim having a scroll handle, the bottom marked "Bailey & Co." 4" h. with various hallmarks. Henry Wise Garnett probably uncle of Maria Garnett and brother of Henry Wise Garnett. 5) American coin silver child's cup engraved "JHP" by Gorham Company, Providence, RI, mid-19th century. Round cup with short foot and small bead decoration having a decorative handle, engraved body with leaves and scrolls. A shield surrounds the initials. Bottom marked "103 coin" and three hallmarks used by the Gorham Company. 3" h. 6) Sterling silver and mixed metal child's cup with no identifying engraving by George W. Shiebler & Co., New York, NY. The shaped body hand hammered with repousse flowers and leaves having one copper colored applied fly, a fancy c-shaped handle, gold washed interior, the bottom marked with the Shiebler winged S "Sterling 312". 3-1/2" h. Total weight approximately 27 troy oz. SIZE: As listed above. PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine, descendant of Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), Captain John Pine Decatur (1786-1832), and Vice Admiral Morton Deyo (1887-1973). Also Descending from the Ten Eyke and Mayo Families. CONDITION: 1) Dents and creases, otherwise good. 2) Generally very good, only small dings. 3) Some minor dings and creases, generally very good. 4) Handle with repairs at juncture to body with two splits at top of juncture, small dings and creases. 5) Handle with pushed in top area, small dents and creases to body. 6) One pencil point dent near base, otherwise very good. 52714-137 WAG (1,000-1,500)
