WILLIAM AND MARY INLAID AND FIGURED WALNUT CHEST ON FRAME.First half 18th century England. In two parts, the dovetailed upper case with molded cornice fitted with a pair of short drawers above three graduated long drawers, all with thumb molded edges. The figural burr walnut panels with contrasting arrow-form crossbanding, fitted to the lower case, with cove molded mid-moldings. The base with a pair of aligned drawers on five spiral twist supports joined by concave dividers and raised on turned feet of later vintage. The etched brasses and escutcheons of the period but not original to this chest. Moldings and backboards of upper case original. SIZE: 58" h x 39" w (overall), 35-1/2" w (case) x 21" d. PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Minor and cosmetic old restorations throughout, notably to moldings and veneers. Structurally good overall with mellow color and patina. 52714-19 HMG (1,500-2,500)
