RENAISSANCE CARVED OAK COFFER.Early 18th century, Mediterranean region. The rectangular hinged lid on original iron hinges, the lid of quartersawn oak opening to a storage well fitted with till. The case with paneled ends, the front with pair of aligned panels carved in low relief with stylized scrolling flowering shrubs with a crenalated carved border. The chest on a molded plinth, the front with canted, scrolling apron flanked by protruding shaped supports. SIZE: 24" h x 39" w x 23" d. PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Chest retains original fumed oak surface, blackened by age. Hinges need reattaching and straightening, some losses to scalloped front apron with normal and accepted abrasions and wear. 52714-23 HMG (400-600)
