TWO SQUARE BACK FEDERAL ARMCHAIRS TOGETHER WITH A BOSTON FANCY CHAIR.First half 19th century, Massachusetts and Mid-Atlantic region. The two square back chairs with tapering classical revival splats within the molded frame continuing to shaped arms on incurved supports, each with trapezoidal seats now covered in floral needlework. Raised on square tapered frontal legs and backswept rear legs, each joined by a recessed box stretcher. The Boston armchair with various neoclassical elements including rope-twist crest rail and medial rail centering a carved slat with scrolled ends and central brass stamped floral roundel flanked by rolled arms on baluster-turned supports centering a trapezoidal cane seat raised on sabre legs. SIZE: height of back from 32 to 36-1/2", height of seat from 16-1/2" to 17-1/2". PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Each chair with early, if not original, surface with undisturbed patina. The square back chairs with multiple repairs to legs at frame and at stretchers. Restoration to both arms of square back chair with slip seat frame. Fancy chair with later cane seat and with minor strengthening repairs to front legs at seat frame. 52714-13 HMG (800-1,200)
