IMPORTANT MAHOGANY ASTRONOMICAL REGULATOR, SIGNED DENT OF LONDON.

Second quarter 19th century, London, England, Edward John Dent (1790-1853). The mahogany arched case fitted with two doors, the outermost door with circular glass plate within a molded surround, a rectangular pendulum viewing aperture below. The second door with full length glass plate drilled to gain access to the winding aperture. Door hinged and fitted precisely to the mahogany case which lines up to a half-round baize covered molded fitter. The case designed to stand either on a shelf and bolted to a wall or to equally stand on floor or platform. The 11" silvered dial, signed "DENT. London / Clock Makers to the Queen" centering a subsidiary seconds dial with blued steel hand above a 24 hour subsidiary dial. The winding aperture is to the left facing. The main chapter ring with Arabic numerals denoting the 60 minute cycle. The serial number "1155" located beneath the "0" of the 24 hour subsidiary dial. The brass movement with 4 pillars, the brass plates with burnished snailed decoration, the wheel train with maintaining power and with deadbeat escapement. The heavy brass, cased, adjustable pendulum with glass cylinder for mercury, swinging against a scale. The movement driven by a single brass cased weight. SIZE: 59-1/2" h x 16-1/2" w x 9" d. CONDITION: The mahogany case with original undisturbed surface and rich dark patina. The baise seal to the inner door intact and functional. The two door locks absent. The outer door retains original surface and latches remain in alignment. The molded surround with wear to original surface. Case is structurally very good with normal and expected wear and abrasions. The movement appears clean an operational. Hands appear original. Silvered dial overly polished resulting in uneven silvering with areas of brass showing through. Brass frame for dial in place and secure. Scale for English inches intact and original, as is horizontal beat scale. Pendulum and weight original and intact. The liquid mercury in pendulum now absent. Very good overall. 52973-1 HMG (8,000-12,000)
