EDOUARD ADAM (French, 1847-1929) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP "JACOB A. STAMLER."Large oil on canvas nautical scene shows broadside view of the black hulled ship with sails up, sailing right to left, flying American flag, ships pennant, and having several men on deck. Another view of the ship coming toward viewer is seen off the bow. All under a multi-colored cloud sky. Signed lower right "Ed. Adam / Harve 1874". The ship was built at North Sixth St, Williamsburg; Thomas Stack was the builder and it was launched October 11th, 1856. Owners were William Laytin and Edwin Hurlbut. The ship was more of a carrier of immigrants than freight servicing. The ship was purchased by John Arbuckle in 1899; he was the son of a Scot/Irish immigrant. He made his money in the coffee business. The ship was made into a floating hotel which made Saturday to Monday trips with activities and accommodations for the guests. Housed in a modern gilt frame. SIZE: 24" h x 36" w. Overall 30" h x 41-1/2" w. CONDITION: Lined, above the blue flag there is a slit in the old canvas which does not penetrate the lining, craquelure, otherwise very good. 52902-11 WAG (5,000-7,000)
