DUNCAN MCFARLANE (British, 1834-1871) PORTRAIT OF THE BARK "THOMAS MELLOR".

Watercolor nautical scene shows the three mast bark in a starboard view leaving Liverpool passing the south stack lighthouse bound for Brazil. There are a number of people on deck, including a man with a top hat at starboard. Another tall ship is being led by a pilot boat off the bow. Housed in a modern gilt frame having an artist and title plaque with a colorful mat. Unsigned. Note: The 257 ton bark "Thomas Mellor" was built in Holton Pans on the River Tyne in the north east of England in 1832. Constructed for the Liverpool shipowners Mellors & Co, she traded almost exclusively with Brazil from her registered port of Liverpool. Aside from a voyage to Bahia in 1839, her regular route was Liverpool-Pernambuco. Known as one of the fastest vessels in the Brazil trade, she made many successful passages over the next 23 years. Her last entry in Lloyd's Register was for 1855. About half of McFarlane's known watercolors show this same background of the vessel outward bound from Liverpool with the distinct landmark of the South Stack, Anglesey off the bowsprit. SIZE: Sight 15" h x 23-1/4" w. Overall 22-3/4" h x 30-1/2" w. CONDITION: Good. 52953-3 WAG (2,000-3,000)
