JAMES EDWARD BUTTERSWORTH (American/British, 1817-1894) PORTRAIT OF THE MERCHANT SHIP DOLPHIN OFF PORTSMOUTH ENGLAND.

Fine oil on canvas nautical scene shows the three mast ship sailing right to left in green white tipped ocean. Several other ships are seen with some anchored off harbor walls. The ship is seen in full sail, flying ships pennant atop main mast. Colorful pink and blue sky with gray and white shaded clouds. Housed in a fine period gesso decorated gilt frame having some corner and edge loss, with gilt artist and title plaque. The unsigned work from Buttersworth's late English period before he came to America in the late 1840's. SIZE: 24" h x 36" w. Overall 30" h x 42" w. CONDITION: Very good, some light craquelure, some minor touch-up, generally very good. 52953-2 WAG (10,000-15,000)
