POSSIBLY BY ROBERT SALMON (American/Scottish, 1775-1844) BROADSIDE OF SAILING VESSEL IN MARSEILLES HARBOR.The watercolor shows a three mast black and white hulled ship with partial sails and crewmen on the deck and rigging. It flies an American flag and on the front sail is a black circle with lines raying out. There is a name on the bow which is indiscernible. A large fort can be seen off bow and some harbor buildings off to the right. The signature "Robert Salmon" in block letters and "1829" are bottom left. The ship is believed to be the same ship depicted in Salmon's famous painting "Ward's of Boston, 1829" a 40" h x 68" w oil on canvas which is in the Boston Society, Old State House, Boston. Housed in a modern black frame with colored silk style mat. SIZE: 15" h x 20-1/2" w. Overall 23-1/2" h x 29" w. CONDITION: Has toning and all over light foxing, not examined out of frame. 52902-12 CF (2,000-4,000)
