FINE FOLK ART CARVING DEPICTING LORD NELSON IN FULL UNIFORM ON PLINTH.

Late 18th-early 19th century, Nova Scotia, possibly Halifax. This nicely carved example depicting Admiral Nelson with right hand tucked beneath blouse, left hand resting by side with well-carved facial features and wearing bicorn hat, sword on left side, now mounted on a later plinth with raised panels. Note: this sculpture purportedly done at the time that Horatio Nelson served as Ship's Chandlery Guard in Halifax, Nova Scotia. SIZE: 50" h (sculpture only) x 9" d x 13-1/2" w. Plinth 17" h x 16" sq. CONDITION: Multiple layers of old paint, muting many details of dress uniform. Old, vertical shrinkage cracks, now painted over and stable. Original iron mounting ring behind proper right shoulder. Old restoration to right arm, notably at elbow. Decoration to hat with old enhancements beneath layers of paint. Proper left toe of boot and foot probably with restoration, again under multiple layers of paint. Sculpture presents well with pleasing surface. 52902-2 HMG (1,800-2,200)
