SHERATON MAHOGANY SECRETARY BOOKCASE.Second quarter 19th century, probably Massachusetts. The case in two parts. The bookcase with swan's neck pediment crest, alternating with large ball-and-spire brass finials above a figural mahogany frieze, over a pair of Gothic astragal-glazed doors with simulated reeded colonettes opening to an interior fitted with three fixed shelves over three aligned stationery drawer above a deep drawer, flanked by valenced pigeonholes. Set back and fitted to the mid-molded lower case with hinged baise-lined writing slope resting on lopers, centering three long drawers with thumb-molded edges, all fitted with original molded brass knobs decorated with shells and fruit, flanked by engaged three-quarter spiral-twist columns headed by stylized pineapple turnings. Raised on slender swelled ring-turned tapering legs terminating in ball feet. SIZE: 91-1/2" h x 39" w x 20" d. PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of Major John Mead Gould. CONDITION: With original surface, now age-darkened with good patina and rich dark-brown color. Finials original. Repair to proper left ear of swan's neck pediment. Loss of small piece proper right rear side of crest. Some glass panels proper right door with tight cracks. All but one glass panel original. Slight and minor warp to writing surface, not affecting function. Otherwise good. 52936-2 HMG (700-900)
