LARGE CARVED GILTWOOD DISPLAYED EAGLE ON PERCH.Circa 1880, Wisconsin. Attributed to Father Adalbert Cipin, who emigrated from Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) to America and became the priest of St. Lawrence Church in Stangelville, Wisconsin, for which he also carved the alter. Signed on the back of the proper left wing "Father Cipin", dated "1880" on the back of the torso, and additionally signed "Carved for Sister..." with in illegible pencil script on the back of the tail. The sculpture mounted on a stepped wood plinth in black paint. SIZE: 21" h (carving only) x 32" w, 22-1/2" h overall. CONDITION: Eagle retains original gilding with light abrasions throughout, notably on either side of head and on wing tips. Two early, if not original, iron braces set into the back of the figure for stabilization of wings and additional carved wooden brace on proper left wing and rear.
